3 Ways to Up the Emotional Ante for More Productive Mornings

Standard

Have you ever wondered how some people can achieve so much in one day? If you asked, I bet most of them would tell you that they are up with the birds every morning! A recent article in Forbes claims that there are studies which have shown a correlation between early risers and success! One of the benefits to being an early riser, it says, is being a better planner, as this time is sometimes used as “quiet time for organization, goal setting, and planning out their days..” Forbes: Benefits Of Early Risers. Planning is the most vital part in maximizing productivity. You may think, oh here we go, another scheduling blog post! WRONG!! This is a post about your habits leading up to hours of planning!!

I have found time to be of value for my life. I run a business as a single mom with no support system, I am building a public speaking empire to help others, and I am on a personal quest of self improvement, which requires a lot of time out for self reflection! I have found 3 habits that have the biggest impact on how much I am able to get done in one day.

B is for bedtime!

I don’t know about anyone else, but going to bed at a decent hour is key when setting my day up for success. My magic number is 9:30. If I go to bed any later than that, I lose time. For instance, if I am in bed by 9:30, it is so easy for me to be up by 4:45 to get to the things that are most important to me. If I go to bed 30 minutes later, I am up at 5:30. That is a 45 minute loss at the very beginning of my day. What can I do in 45 minutes?? Oh, you just don’t even know! So, I challenge you to do the same! Identify bedtime habits that can be adjusted! Play around with those times and take notice to how your body reacts to them. If I am up at 4:45, I am a ball of positive energy. However, if I am up at 5:30, I am a little more sluggish than I like to begin my day. Then, commit to this new habit for 30 days! Do not allow ANYTHING to interrupt that bedtime schedule. You protect it at all cost. If this means you sleep with your phone in the next room, so be it! Pretend your fairy godmother will turn you into a pumpkin at 9:30 if you are not home and in bed! This habit will allow you to begin your day off on the right happy foot to ensure success across the board!

Your sense of smell is your best friend while the  rest of the world is still asleep!

When I wake up in the mornings, my routine is always the same. I let my pup out to potty, put my pot of coffee to brewing, then I light a strengthening and balancing essential oil blend. Those first few minutes are important because I intentionally trigger my sense of smell to wake my brain up. Through the years, I have learned that our sense of smell is linked to the area of the brain that houses emotions, behavior, and memory. When I ignite smells that communicate a sense of coziness, it puts a massive jumpstart on my day! My thoughts start flowing more effortlessly at that time than they would in the middle of a chaotic day. So I use my mornings to connect with myself on a deeper level to write, plan and organize, and set future goals to reach my fullest potential. Try this out! I know.. it probably sounds brutal, but if you take the time to set up an ambiance in your thinking space, you will find yourself excited about those early mornings. What better person to have coffee with, while the rest of the world is still on silent, than yourself??

Get lost in the sound of mornings!

The one task I loathe with all my being is accounting. I would rather scrub toilets than work numbers! However, since owning my own business, I have found a great trick in getting my mind motivated, first thing in the morning, to think about daunting tasks when I am not in the mood to do so. I use my sense of sound as reverse psychology to procrastination. Not just any sound, however. I have specific sounds that line up with whatever task I am working on. Take writing as an example. I have learned that it is best to listen to classical music when I am writing. You’d be surprised at how your brain lines itself up with the notes of a violin and piano when in deep thought. Its a process that goes unnoticed until you see how much you’ve accomplished in the time it took for one song to play. The more interesting aspect, is that once you get going, its almost impossible to stop. I feel my heartbeat speed up and my hands get lost in the beat of the sound. If you don’t believe me, try watching a high action film. Notice that when scenes get intense, the producers will throw in a little classical music to up the emotional ante to get your heartbeat pumping. It works, doesn’t it?? So, turn off the t.v. and turn up those beats! Find the magical soundtrack to your life! You will thank me, I promise!!!

What works for one, may not work for all. However, in a society where time is of essence, wouldn’t it feel great to make progress in your life’s vision just by changing 3 morning habits??? It is definitely worth thinking about! Try it out and let me know if it works for you as well!
